Welcome to the 17th edition of the époque press é-zine on the theme, Freedom.

Freedom is a word that resonates across borders, histories, and personal lives. It carries weight, urgency, hope, and yet its meaning is never fixed. For some, freedom is the fight for justice and equality. For others, it is the quiet space to create, to love, or simply to breathe without fear. Freedom can be a collective banner under which voices rise together, or it can be deeply individual, found in the moments we carve out for ourselves.

This issue of our é-zine is dedicated to exploring freedom in all its complexities and contradictions. It brings together a vibrant collection of short stories, poetry, spoken word, and visual artwork from contributors spanning Kenya, Malaysia, Ireland, the UK, the USA, and Canada. Each piece offers a glimpse into how freedom is imagined, pursued, celebrated, or questioned, and what the consequences can be when freedom is restricted.

You will encounter works that confront political and personal concepts of freedom, and the often-blurred line between the two. Some pieces speak to the freedom of self-expression, of breaking silences and reclaiming identities that have been overlooked or erased. Others find freedom in small acts of resistance or in the resilience of everyday activities. Together, they remind us that freedom is not a single destination but a shifting landscape we navigate, negotiate, and sometimes fight to hold onto. What unites all of the features is a shared urgency to ask what freedom means and what it costs in a world where it is unevenly granted and often fiercely contested.

As you look through our é-zine we hope you can reflect on your own understanding of freedom. Where do you find it? What limits it? And how might art — through story, image, or spoken word — help us imagine new ways of being free?

Finally, it takes a lot of caffeine to keep us going in the production of our é-zines, so if you do like what we are doing perhaps you would kindly consider giving us a small caffeine treat via our ‘Buy us a Coffee’ button above, or the website here.
