Of her work, Gail says…

‘My inspiration comes from travelling around London on a day to day basis. I have an affinity for the ordinary places that people don't often notice as they're rushing from one place to another. We are all very familiar with train and tube stations but because we are on the way to somewhere else we very rarely stop and look. They are also not very nice places at times - very crowded and noisy - and perhaps it's easier to put your headphones on or look at your phone and ignore your surroundings as you pass through. But I get so much out of observation. I like to portray the world that I live in and that happens to be London. London is such a huge and varied place that I think you would find enough subject matter to last you several lifetimes without running out.

I suppose when it comes to the tubes and the trains (and my new passion, roads!) I like the idea of being on a journey. You never really know what's going to happen as you travel from one place to another - mostly nothing obviously - but there's always a chance of the unexpected happening and its always interesting to be suspended from your normal responsibilities and commitments while you sit on a train looking out of the window.’

Gail Brodholt is a leading painter and printmaker of contemporary urban landscapes. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers (RE). She was born in South London to immigrant parents, her father Norwegian and her mother from Trinidad, and she trained at Kingston University.
